How to Make a Refreshing Matcha Soda (Only Three Ingredients)

There’s nothing quite like an ice-cold, fizzy matcha soda to keep you cool and caffeinated—especially when you’re working long hours in a hot kitchen! Back when I was a pastry chef in San Francisco, this was my go-to summer pick-me-up, offering the perfect balance of earthy matcha and sparkling refreshment.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons Matcha Powder
  • 3 Tablespoons Hot Water 175F/80C
  • 5 oz Soda Water or Tonic Water/Flavored Sparkling Water

Instructions

  • Warm your bamboo whisk by soaking it in a cup of hot water for 1–2 minutes—this softens the tines, helps prevent breakage, and preps it for a smoother whisk. Then sift the matcha into a bowl or cup to remove clumps.
    2 teaspoons Matcha Powder
  • Add warm water (not boiling!) and whisk until frothy using a bamboo whisk or milk frother.
    3 Tablespoons Hot Water
  • Fill a glass with ice and pour in the soda water.
    5 oz Soda Water
  • Slowly pour the whisked matcha over the top and watch it swirl beautifully! Give it a gentle stir if needed, and enjoy immediately.

How to Customize Your Matcha Soda
One of the best things about matcha soda is how easy it is to personalize! Here are some fun variations to try:
  • Matcha Tonic – Swap soda water for tonic water for a more complex, slightly bitter twist.
  • Citrus Burst – Add a squeeze of lime, lemon, or yuzu juice for a bright, zesty flavor.
  • Flavored Sparkling Water – Try grapefruit sparkling water (like Fever-Tree’s) for a subtle fruity note.
  • Sweetened Version – Stir in a little honey, maple syrup, or vanilla syrup for a lightly sweet touch.
  • Herbal Infusions – Muddle fresh mint or basil in the glass before adding the soda for a refreshing herbal kick.
