The sweet, juicy appeal of berries and the creamy, dreamy deliciousness of cream cheese buttercream collide in this simple Blueberry Frosting recipe. Made with just 5 ingredients in less than 10 minutes, this gorgeous, naturally colored blueberry cream cheese icing is about to level up all your warm weather bakes!
Spring has officially sprung, which means it's time to lean heavily into lighter, brighter recipes that reflect the season. Whether it’s a French strawberry tart, sweet-tart lemon donuts filled with Meyer lemon curd, or floral lavender berry muffins, my kitchen has been filled with both literal and figurative sunshine as of late, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
But, while I was thumbing through my favorite springtime recipes (remember my lemon layer cake and my strawberry cheesecake cookies?), I thought to myself “what would be a fun, easy way to add some customizable pizzazz?” And thus, my blueberry cream cheese frosting recipe was born.
It doesn’t matter whether you pair it with your favorite lemon desserts, use it to stuff beautiful blueberry macarons, or use it in place of blackberry buttercream, raspberry buttercream, or really any berry buttercream (on a pistachio cake, perhaps?!?). Regardless of your choices, you’re gonna flip for this delightfully tangy blueberry icing.

🍴Ingredients
As promised, I only have a short grocery list for you. Here’s what you’ll need to make my best-ever blueberry cake frosting:
- Unsalted Butter - You can’t have buttercream without butter! If possible, reach for European-style butter, which has a higher milk fat percentage than American-style. Other good attributes to look for include grass-fed, organic, and/or cultured.
- Cream Cheese - I tend to take the French pastry approach where fat is your friend, not your enemy. If you want to lighten this easy blueberry frosting a tad, don’t reach for low-fat or non-fat cream cheese. Instead, opt for naturally lighter Neufchatel or another farmer’s cheese.
- Powdered Sugar - Also known as “confectioner’s sugar” or “icing sugar,” this fluffy white sweetener adds both flavor and substance. If you’re fresh out, you can blitz granulated sugar with cornstarch or potato starch to make your own.
- Vanilla Extract - For aromatic warmth. If you want to try a fun twist, try replacing half of the vanilla with lemon or almond extract instead.
- Blueberry Jam - You can use store-bought or homemade. If you opt for store-bought, try and use a high-quality brand that lists actual blueberries as the first ingredient.
See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.
⏲️ Substitutions & Variations
- Dairy-Free/Vegan - Want all the tangy, buttery, blueberry-flavored goodness but can’t hang with dairy? Simply swap in plant-based butter and your favorite vegan cream cheese.
- Different Flavored Jam - I’m on a real blueberry kick lately, but this berry cream cheese frosting can easily be made with whatever flavor of preserves you like!
- Diabetic-Friendly - If you’re watching your added sugar intake, you’re welcome to swap in your favorite cup-for-cup sugar-free powdered sugar alternative. You may also want to use reduced-sugar or sugar-free jam.

📖 How to Make Blueberry Frosting: Step-by-Step Instructions
Making this blueberry frosting for cake is a snap. Here’s how it’s done:
Step 1: Beat the room-temperature butter and cream cheese together (preferably in a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment) on medium speed until it’s uniformly smooth and somewhat fluffy.
Step 2: Scrape down the sides, then add the powdered sugar slowly (trust me here — if you try and do it too fast, your whole kitchen will be covered in in!), followed by the vanilla extract & blueberry jam.
Step 3: Frost to your heart’s content. Place blueberry buttercream icing in a plastic bag or pastry bag with the tip cut off and the piping tip of your choice inserted, then use to decorate cakes, fill cookies, or as desired. (And don’t forget to share your beautiful creations with me!)
👩🏻🍳 Expert Tips
- Start with room-temperature butter and cream cheese. If you start when they’re too chilly, you’ll end up with chunks of cream cheese throughout that seem impossible to get rid of no matter how long you beat it. We’re looking for cloud-like, homogenous consistency.
- Scrape down the sides AND bottom of your bowl, and don’t be afraid to do it more than once. There’s nothing more irritating than scooping your cream cheese blueberry frosting into your piping bag only to find a huge chunk of cream cheese hanging out at the bottom.
- Sift your powdered sugar for the silkiest, smoothest frosting around.

💭 Recipe FAQs
In short, buttercream is a variety of frosting made with (you guessed it) butter, but not all frosting is buttercream. (See my cream cheese frosting without butter, vanilla marshmallow meringue frosting, or simple cinnamon roll glaze for a few examples of non-buttercream frostings.)
Just by virtue of adding blueberry jam to this cream cheese buttercream, you’ll get a natural tinge of dusty purply-blue. If you’d like to increase the blue color to make royal blue icing, you can use blue gel food coloring, butterfly pea powder, or even freeze-dried blueberry powder (made from grinding freeze-dried blueberries in a food processor) to do it.
I tend to store my frosting directly in the pastry bag with the piping tip, then wrap it all up with plastic wrap to keep it from drying out or taking on any refrigerator smells. It should last for up to 2 hours at room temp, about 2 weeks in the fridge, or up to 3 months in the freezer.
