    ❓ What is simple syrup

The basic creation of simple syrup is to simmer equal parts sugar and water together. After the sugar dissolves, the mixture becomes thick and viscous. It’s a sweet ingredient that can add balance and a delicious way to add flavor to your favorite strawberry cocktails, hot tea, mocktails, whipped cream, cakes, and more! Alternate berry syrups to try can be made with lemons, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries!

Give these delicious syrups a try once you get a hand for making your own syrups at home: Jalapeno syrup, orange simple syrup, cranberry syrup, demerara syrup and strawberry syrup!

    🍴Ingredients

Ingredients needed to Make Strawberry Simple Syrup.

To make strawberry simple syrup, you'll need just a few simple ingredients that are likely already in your pantry or fridge. Here's what you'll need if you're heading to the grocery store:

    • Water - Use regular tap water or take the flavor up a notch with filtered water.
    • Sugar - Granulated sugar is best here for strawberry syrup. You can use regular white sugar or turbinado sugar, caster sugar, or demerara sugar for a deeper color and flavor profile.
    • Fresh Strawberries - You're welcome to use fresh or frozen strawberries, depending on what you have on hand for this easy recipe! Using fresh strawberries will give you a brighter and more intense pure flavor in your fresh strawberry syrup, whereas frozen strawberries will work as well and are a great option if you're making this syrup when strawberries are not in season.

Don't forget, you can use extra strawberries to whip up strawberry-infused treats like strawberry juice, strawberry coulis, strawberry vodka lemonade or strawberry tartlets!

    ⚒️ Equipment

Making this strawberry simple syrup recipe (or really any plain simple syrup) is a snap. All you need are basic kitchen tools before making cocktail recipes with a cocktail shaker. Here’s what I suggest you grab for making this homemade syrup for your favorite drinks

    • Saucepan - Every kitchen needs a small saucepan. If possible, splurge a little bit for one with a heavy bottom — it’ll last much longer than cheap versions and will also help to minimize the chance of scorching.
    • Mesh Strainer - You’re welcome to fish out the strawberries using a slotted spoon if you prefer, but placing the mesh strainer over the funnel leading into your squeeze bottle is the quickest, most direct method I’ve tried.
    • Squeeze Bottle & Funnel - These are optional, but they are the easiest way I know how to store simple syrup without making a sticky mess of your fridge. The squeeze bottle also makes it easy to measure exactly what you need. You’re also welcome to use a mason jar, delitainer, or any other container with a tight-fitting lid.

    📖 Step by Step Instructions

Water and sugar in a saucepan.

Step 1: Make the simple syrup. Simmer the equal parts water and sugar together in a medium saucepan over medium heat until the sugar dissolves.

Step 2: Infuse with muddled strawberries. Toss in the muddled strawberries and continue heating for about 5 minutes.

Straining strawberry syrup with a mesh strainer.

Step 3: Strain the hot syrup with a fine mesh sieve or fine mesh strainer and enjoy! You can strain the solids from the syrup once the syrup cools.

Step 4: Use the tasty strawberry syrup right away or allow it to cool to room temperature and bottle it for later.

    👩🏻‍🍳 Expert Tips

    • Steep for at least an hour. The longer you steep, the more rich flavor you’ll extract from the broken down berries and get a sweet strawberry flavor.
    • Wrap it up as a charming and thoughtful hostess or housewarming gift to take with you at your next get together with the makings of a strawberry mojito!
    • Use a squeeze bottle for storage. Your kitchen will stay cleaner for it, which is always a bonus. All the easier to add into your ice cream sundae, strawberry lemonade, favorite cocktails, or as a liquid sweetener for your homemade italian soda!
    • Add other flavors like cinnamon, vanilla, fresh herbs like rosemary or spices like cardamom!
    • Try using organic demerara sugar instead of cane sugar to mix the flavors up!

❓ How to use this fruity simple syrup

The best way to use strawberry syrup made with juicy fresh berries is in your favorite beverages or cocktails. Up your cocktail game by adding infused simple syrup in my Tequila Honey Bee Margarita or add a little to these Coconut Pineapple Margaritas instead.

You can use this syrup anywhere you need an extra boost of flavor, such as:

    • In passion fruit mojitos, martinis, and gin gimlets and iced tea.
    • Pour into an ice cream base for extra flavor
    • A great addition to stir into creative mocktail recipes or added to sparkling water for a strawberry soday.
    • Drizzle over waffles, pancakes, savory crepes, and french toast instead of maple syrup.
    • In marinades or sauces for grilled meat and vegetables.
    • In glazes for fruit salads, dinner rolls, and savory quick breads.

    💭 Recipe FAQs

How should I store my syrup?

Simply transfer it into a clean glass jar or bottle with a tight-fitting lid and store it in the refrigerator for up to a month. Make sure the airtight container is clean and dry before pouring in the syrup to prevent any mold or bacteria growth.

How long does homemade Berry simple syrup last?

If properly refrigerated, this homemade syrup should last for at least a month in the fridge.

How can I prolong the syrup's shelf life?

A great way to prolong the lifespan of your syrup is to add a splash of vodka or other clear spirits to the mixture. The alcohol acts as a preservative, slowing down the spoilage process and helping the syrup last for up to six months in the fridge. Just keep in mind that the addition of liquor may alter the taste of your syrup, so adjust the amount accordingly!

    Notes

How to Store Flavored Simple Syrups
If you’re wondering how long simple syrup lasts, the answer is roughly 2-4 weeks in the fridge!
Because of their high level of sugar, most simple syrups will last in the fridge for at least a month. Please note that “rich” simple syrups made with double the sugar will last for even longer. Any syrups that have solids left in them (e.g. fruit purées) should be used within 2-3 weeks.
