❓ What is a mojito?
A classic mojito is made with fresh mint leaves, lime, granulated sugar, soda water, and rum. This original recipe was invented in Cuba during the 16th century and is one of the oldest known cocktails to date. Despite its rich history and age, the mojito is still very popular and listed on cocktail and bar menus worldwide.
🍴Ingredients
- Light rum - Also known as silver or white rum. This type of rum has no color and the flavor isn’t as harsh as dark rum. For additional delicious tropical flavors, substitute light rum for coconut-flavored white rum like Malibu.
- Passion puree and mango juice - Freshly squeezed fruit juice is best, but you can also use storebought juice. Try pineapple or guava juice instead if you can’t find mango or passion fruit.
- Lime - Lime plays a crucial role in any mojito recipe. The cocktail can’t begin without muddling lime wedges, mint, and simple syrup together first. You won’t have a well-balanced or vibrant cocktail without it.
- Mint leaves - This wouldn’t be a passion fruit mojito without fresh mint. Make sure you use fresh spearmint leaves and NOT peppermint.
- Simple syrup - While the tropical fruit juices lend most of the sweetness here, just a little simple syrup will bring every layer of flavor together. Can’t get enough of the refreshing mint flavors? Amp up the freshness by replacing the plain simple syrup with a custom mint simple syrup infusion.
- Club soda - For some bubbles and fizz! Sparkling water or citrus-flavored seltzer also work well.
⏲️ Substitutions & Variations
- Freshly squeezed vs. bottled lime juice - When in doubt, always go for freshly squeezed! Fresh citrus juice is much brighter and tastes noticeably different in drinks.
- Slap the mint - The key to releasing the minty fresh aromas is by literally “slapping” the mint leaves. Hold the leaves in one hand and smack them over your other hand. This will warm up the oils and release the aromas and flavors before you begin muddling.
- Adding warm spices - Warm, earthy spices pair perfectly with tropical fruit juices. Garnish your passion fruit mojito with a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg or replace the simple syrup with cinnamon-infused simple syrup.
📖 Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Start muddling. Muddle the simple syrup, and lime quarters together in an empty cocktail glass.
Step 2: Build the mojito. Fill the glass with ice. Add the mint leaves, rum, passion fruit puree, mango juice, and a splash of club soda. Stir to combine.
Step 3: Garnish and serve. Garnish your mango and passion fruit cocktail with a slice of mango, passion fruit, and a few “slapped” mint sprigs. Enjoy!
👩🏻🍳 Expert Tips
- Freshness First: Always opt for ripe passion fruit for an authentic, vibrant mojito flavor. While passionfruit juice can substitute, fresh passion fruit pulp with its seeds delivers the best taste and texture.
- Versatility: The allure of a tropical mojito lies in its adaptability, with raspberry mojito mocktail or pineapple mojitos as tasty alternatives. On hot summer days, it's perfect for experimenting, ensuring you have both cocktail and mocktail versions for all to enjoy.
- Presentation Tips: Serve your mango passion fruit mojito in a tall glass brimming with ice cubes and garnished with lime slices for a visual treat. Remember, the aesthetics of your tropical cocktail enhance the overall drinking experience, especially on a sizzling summer day.
💭 Recipe FAQs
Quadruple the ingredients and build the mojito in a half-gallon pitcher without ice. You can even do this a day ahead of time to save a little time. Just be sure to leave the club soda out until it’s time to serve the mojitos.
On the day of the party, put out some fresh glasses and plenty of ice. Stir the club soda into the pitcher and allow your guests to serve themselves.
Dark rum typically isn’t recommended in mojitos because it throws off the taste and color. However, since we’re making a mango and passion fruit cocktail, a dark-spiced rum with warm flavors (like Captain Morgan) will taste great.
No rum at home? Go ahead and replace it with vodka or tequila instead.
Yes! To make a virgin passion fruit mojito, simply omit the rum and either replace it with 2 ounces of water, soda or 1 extra ounce of passion fruit puree and mango juice.
