    What is Dragon Fruit?

Dragon fruit, also known as Pitaya or Strawberry Pear, is an edible fruit that grows from several species of cacti. Native to Central and Southern Americas, this delectable fruit is now cultivated around the world in tropical regions spanning from the Carribean to Southeast Asia.

The name “dragon fruit” began to surface in the early 1960’s in America, describing the vibrantly colored leathery skin and and prominent spikes protecting the edible flesh. Dragon fruit products are often magenta, though the fruits come in a range of colors including white, yellow, and pink.

Dragon fruit flavor can vary depending on the variety and ripeness of the individual fruit. Generally speaking, I find that pitaya has a flavor that reminds me of pears and watermelons, with a hint of kiwi fruit due to soft texture and edible seeds.

    About This Recipe

If you’re anything like me, the tail end of winter seems to drag on forever. I can’t wait for barbecues, days spent lounging by the pool, and sunsets that don’t occur until after dinner. Help will warmer weather into existence with this gorgeously-hued smoothie recipe!

Made with a combination of starchy bananas, juicy pineapple, sweet kiwi, creamy coconut milk, tart lime, and the real star of the show – dragon fruit – this delightful tropical smoothie tastes like beach getaway in a glass.

I love how simple this pitaya smoothie recipe is to throw together - simply dump everything in a blender and whizz until smooth and creamy. The whole process takes just a few minutes - even less if you prep smoothie packs ahead of time!

My dragon fruit smoothie recipe is also pretty versatile. Add or swap in your own favorite frozen fruits, add a handful of greens for an added nutritional boost, or turn it into a thick smoothie bowl to top with granola and chopped nuts for a heartier meal. Check out the “Optional Variations” section for more inspiration on how to customize this tropical smoothie recipe!

If you’re on the lookout for a fun, fresh, and fully portable way to get more fruit in your diet, you’ve come to the right place.

    Ingredients

    Fruits

    • Banana - Frozen banana is the base of nearly all of my favorite smoothie recipes. Peel and slice or break ripe bananas into smaller chunks and freeze in a single layer for an extra cold smoothie. Once frozen through, combine in a large zip-top bag and keep in the freezer for up to 3 months! Not a fan of banana? Swap in mashed sweet potato or an avocado instead.
    • Pineapple - Pineapple can be purchased fresh, frozen, or canned. If you opt for canned, make sure to grab the kind that is packed in juice instead of syrup. Not a fan of pineapple? Try green apples, oranges, or apricots instead.
    • Dragon Fruit (Pitaya) - Depending on where you live and the time of year, you may be able to find fresh dragon fruit with pink flesh. Pick fruits that are heavy for their size, that yield under pressure from your thumb (like a ripe avocado), and that have no visible blemishes or bruises. If you can’t find fresh, check the frozen section for pitaya purée or frozen dragon fruit smoothie packs (usually stored in a bag with a vibrant color).
    • Kiwi - I love the flavor of kiwi, but I know some folks don’t prefer it. Try swapping in strawberries if you’re in the latter camp.

    Liquids

    • Coconut Milk - For the best coconut flavor and creamiest consistency, I suggest using canned full-fat coconut milk. That said, feel free to swap in any milk you like, plant-based milk (like oat milk or unsweetened almond milk) or otherwise. If creamy isn’t your jam, coconut water or any kind of fruit juice will also work!
    • Lime Juice - Opt for fresh here. To get the most juice from your citrus, give it a firm roll on the countertop for 10-15 seconds before cutting. Feel free to swap in lemon, orange, grapefruit, or pomelo if you prefer.

    Equipment

Making a delicious, healthy smoothie requires just one piece of kitchen equipment: a high-speed blender. Vitamix blenders are always at the top of my list, but less expensive brands like Blendtec, Ninja, or Nutribullet will also do the trick. A high speed blender will allow for the most delightful creamy texture!

As a side note: While I love keeping one in my arsenal for creating gorgeous emulsions and creamy soups, immersion blenders aren't quite cut out for the task of smoothie-making.

While they’re not entirely necessary for smoothie enjoyment, I also suggest having a reusable travel cup with a straw for sipping your bright pink beautiful smoothie on the go!

How to Make a Pitaya Smoothie

There’s no instructions simpler than making a smoothie. Simply add all the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth, stopping to scrape down the sides as necessary. Pour into your serving glasses and enjoy!

    Optional Variations

The great thing about smoothies is that you can custom tailor them to any preference for your healthy breakfast filled with tropical flavor. Here are a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

    • Don’t love one of the fruits in the mix? Skip it! Feel free to swap in different fresh fruit in the recipe, add in a different fruit, or simply hold back on some of the liquid.
    • Want more protein? Add a scoop of protein powder or an egg white to the mix is a great way to amp up the protein.
    • Need more fiber? Add a handful of leafy greens to the blender; you won’t be able to taste them through all the bright sweetness of the fruit.
    • Want less fat? Skip the coconut milk and add coconut water instead.
    • Want a heartier meal? Hold back on some of the coconut milk to make a thicker mixture that is appropriate for a smoothie bowl, then top with optional add-ins like fresh or dried fruit, crunchy granola, chopped nuts, nut butters, chia seeds, hemp seeds or any other topping your heart desires.
    • Want a drink worthy of a cocktail umbrella? Spike your smoothie with the spirit of your choosing. I find that rum is particularly appealing here.

    Expert Tips

Making delicious dragon fruit smoothies is a snap, but here are my favorite tips I’ve learned along the way:

    • Make smoothie packs for an almost instant breakfast or snack. Not a morning person? Me neither. To make these dragon fruit smoothies a little more accessible, I like to assemble all the ingredients (minus the liquids) in individual zip-top bags. When it comes time for breakfast, all I have to do is empty the bag into my blender, pour in my liquid, and flip a switch. Presto! Breakfast is served.
    • Turn it into a dragon fruit delicious smoothie bowl with fresh ingredients by holding back on some of the liquid. On days when I have time to be a little more leisurely in the morning (or simply when I’m craving a bit more texture), I like to turn my smoothies into smoothie bowls. All it takes is removing a few tablespoons of liquid to create a thicker mixture which can then be topped with granola, more fruit, or nuts. This easy smoothie recipe turns into a healthy snack or a variation of a acai bowl in moments!
    • Cut back on prep time by buying frozen fruit. If you don’t want to break out your knife and cutting board, do yourself a favor and hit the frozen aisle at your local grocery store. Bags of frozen fruit are just as healthy as fresh, are oftentimes cheaper, AND they have already been prepped for you. That’s a win-win-win, my friends.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How should I cut a fresh dragon fruit?

Easy! Simply cut it down the middle from top to bottom, then use a spoon to carve out the flesh before adding to your dragon fruit smoothie.

What other fruits taste good with pitaya?

The subtly sweet-sour taste of dragon fruit makes it an ideal partner for just about any type of fruit. Mangoes, oranges, pineapples, strawberries, papayas, blueberries… the list goes on!

Can I eat dragon fruit every day?

Sure! This tasty fruit will count towards your 9 recommended daily servings of fresh produce. It’s low in calories and chock-full of vitamins and minerals, so there’s no reason you can’t enjoy it as often as possible.
