Watch out, world! I’ve just discovered the pure, rapturous joy of a homemade Green Tea Shot. Made with a spirited blend of Irish whisky, homemade sweet and sour, peach schnapps, and a splash of Sprite, these tasty little libations are easy to slurp down in one gulp — perfect for reliving your younger glory days without getting totally tanked. 😉

    About This Recipe

While I’m always a fan of Happy Hour, I have a tendency to lean into sippable cocktails like Paper Planes, Aperol Negronis, and various sour cocktails. It wasn’t until a recent reminiscence of my younger days as an early 20-something when I remembered how fun it is to take a shot with friends.

Now, I might not have it in me to do multiple shots of straight liquor anymore (though you might catch me downing one or two on a particularly festive occasion), but a composed shot thinned out with some mixers and lower-ABV liqueurs? Those are still wholly welcome!

With a flavor reminiscent of that famed lemonade-iced tea combo, this delightful Jameson green tea shot recipe is here just in time for the upcoming golf season. Aside from being shockingly refreshing, this popular shots recipe is also:

    • Quick & Easy - Pour, shake, strain, and top with a splash of soda. It’s about as easy of a cocktail recipe as they come.
    • Made With Only 4 Ingredients - Despite the short list, this tasty adult beverage is packed full of flavor. Try this white tea shot for another fun option with similar ingredients!
    • Sweetly Refreshing - They taste like lazy afternoons on a porch swing. And while they’re easy to slam down like a newly minted 21-year-old at a bar, you’re just as welcome to turn your green tea shot into a proper cocktail meant for sipping.
    • Budget-Friendly - Paying roughly $10 for about 2 ounces of drink feels like highway robbery. Make your own Jameson-peach schnapps sippers at home for a fraction of the price.
    • Batchable - If you have a larger gathering coming up, feel free to whip up a full pitcher of these sweetly satisfying libations rather than a single shot. They’re made with an easy-to-remember 1:1:1 ratio of schnapps, sour, and whisky, so you can make as big (or as little) a portion of as you like.

    Ingredients & Substitutions

As promised, you only need 4 simple ingredients to make this green tea shot recipe. Here’s what to grab:

    • Peach Schnapps - While it may get a reputation for being the gateway alcohol for tween girls, peach schnapps is actually lovely as a mixer. In this fun concoction, it creates a peach iced tea vibe that is very convincing and easily found at your nearby liquor store.
    • Sweet & Sour Mix - Making your own sweet and sour mix is as simple as adding lemon juice and fresh lime juice into simple syrup. While it does take about 5 minutes worth of effort, the sour flavor is so far superior to the store-bought brands that you’ll never go back.
    • Irish Whiskey - Since this drink is often called a “Jameson green tea,” the homonymous Jameson Irish Whiskey whisky is a clear front-runner. Feel free to swap in any Irish whisky brand you prefer.
    • Sprite/7-Up - While a splash of lemon-lime soda is generally used in green tea shots, you’re also welcome to use plain club soda, your choice of citrus-y seltzer, or lemonade instead.
    • Garnish - If you want to serve this drink as more of a martini, or if you just want to be fancy with your shots, a thin slice of lemon or lime and a sprig of mint makes for a nice, adult touch.

    Equipment

To make this simple whiskey shot full of fruity flavor, fresh citrus juices and a greenish color you'll need:

    • Measuring cup or jigger
    • Cocktail shaker & strainer
    • Shot glasses

How To Make A Green Tea Shot

Making these composed shots couldn’t be easier. Here’s how it’s done with our main ingredients:

Step 1: Shake. Add schnapps, sweet and sour mix, and whiskey in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for about 45 seconds, until chilled and frothy.

Step 2: Strain into shot glasses and enjoy!

    Optional Variations

While I’m fully smitten with this fun shot recipe, there is plenty of room for you to make do with what you have on hand. Here are a few possible variations to consider:

    • White Tea Shot - Swap vodka for whisky.
    • Red Tea Shot - Swap bourbon for Irish whisky and triple sec for peach schnapps.
    • Non-Alcoholic Green Tea Shot - Use your favorite NA whisky alternative and swap in either a non-alcoholic schnapps (e.g. Teichenné brand) or peach juice, peach nectar, or peach iced tea.

    Expert Tips

    • Cocktails can be batched for a large group. If you decide to batch your cocktail for your next party or a hot summer day, make sure to keep the soda separate until you’re ready to serve so the effervescence doesn’t dissipate.
    • Multiply the recipe x2 for a larger cocktail rather than a shot. This “Irish green tea” is also lovely served up like a martini.

    Storage Instructions

Any leftover batched green tea whisky shots can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week, or frozen for up to 3 months. Please note that the cocktail won’t freeze all the way through as a result of the liquor.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do green tea shots get you drunk?

If you drink enough of them, they sure do! With a rough ABV of about 15-20%, these party shots aren’t nearly as potent as pure liquor. But, they’re stronger than beer and most wines based on the combination of ingredients.

Why is it called a green tea shot?

When the green tea shot ingredients are mixed together, they turn into a green hue, not unlike actual green tea. It also has a flavor that is reminiscent of an Arnold Palmer (iced tea mixed with lemonade), so the tea reference feels valid. That said, there is no actual tea in this libation!

What if I don’t have a cocktail shaker?

Not worries! You can use a mason jar or small lidded container to make this sweet-sour whiskey drink with ice cubes. Shake, strain and serve the green tea shooter!
