A fruity and tropical gin fizz recipe

If you’re looking for the best gin cocktail recipe, you’ve come to the right place. This Passion Fruit Gin Fizz transforms the traditional gin fizz cocktail recipe into a tropical passion fruit sensation! Made with passion fruit puree, gin, vanilla, and cream, each sip is refreshingly sweet and creamy.

Believe it or not, the secret to making frothy cocktails without changing the flavor is to use an egg white. There’s no need to worry about tasting the egg white! It’s tasteless and adds a wonderful velvety texture to the cocktail!

After just one sip of this fruity gin fizz, you’ll be completely hooked! For more drinks made with a frothy egg white, check out my Pear Quince & Elderflower Sour, Blueberry & Black Currant Cocktail, and Blood Orange Pisco Sour.

    What is a gin fizz?

“Fizz”-style drinks began appearing in bartending guides in the 1870s and were wildly popular for much of the first half of the 20th century. Fizzes typically feature liquor (like gin or whisky), citrus juice, and club soda.

A traditional gin fizz recipe is made with gin, lemon juice, sugar, and topped with club soda. This recipe is considered a  “silver” gin fizz because it includes an egg white, making it delightfully bubbly, foamy, and delicious. The tangy and tart passion fruit in this recipe is a bonus to this iconic drink.

    Passion fruit gin fizz ingredients

    • Gin - Gin has a strong piney aroma and sharp citrus taste. There’s no need to break the bank on a premium bottle when making a gin fizz because the passion fruit hides most of the intricate flavors. Gordon’s and Beefeater are inexpensive and all-around good gins.
    • Passion fruit puree - This sweet and tart puree tastes like a blend of pineapple, kiwi, and mango. If fresh passion fruit isn’t available, you can use “passion fruit cocktail” instead. This cocktail is made with added sugar, meaning you’ll likely need to use less simple syrup in the recipe.
    • Simple syrup - To enhance the sweet flavors and balance any tartness. Use my step-by-step guide to learn how to make your own homemade simple syrup.
    • Egg white - This classic gin fizz ingredient will give your fizzy drink a layer of foam on top.
    • Heavy cream - For an extra foamy consistency and a smooth mouth-feel.
    • Soda water - For the bubbles!
    • Garnish - I used passion fruit pulp and lime wheels.

How to make a passion fruit gin fizz

Step 1: Dry shake. Add the gin, passion fruit puree, simple syrup, egg white, and heavy cream to a cocktail shaker and dry shake the ingredients for 20 seconds.

Step 2: Add ice. Add the ice and shake vigorously for another 30 seconds.

Step 3: Strain. Fill a tall glass with ice. Strain your cocktail over the ice and top with a splash of soda water.
Step 4: Garnish and serve. Last but not least, garnish the top of your cocktail with passion fruit pulp and a lime wheel. Cheers!

Tips to make the best gin fizz

    • When shopping for passion fruit, look for fruit that is dark purple or deep red/yellow with wrinkly skin. To ripen, let it sit at room temperature for a few days.
    • Feel free to use more or less simple syrup to your liking. You can also omit it altogether.
    • It’s crucial that you dry shake the cocktail ingredients first to fully emulsify the egg white.
    • Strain the gin fizz ASAP after shaking with ice. No one likes a watered-down cocktail!

    Flavor variations

If you’d like to switch up your passion fruit cocktail, you can swap in another fruit juice. Try any of these tasty flavor ideas:

    • Kiwi strawberry
    • Pineapple mango
    • Blackberry
    • Papaya
    • Raspberry

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do you process passion fruit for cocktails?

First, slice the fruit in half and spoon out the pulp. Next, press the pulp through a fine-mesh strainer over a bowl to reserve the puree. Repeat until most of the juice is released. Set the pulp aside for garnish.

Where can you find passion fruit puree?

If you don’t want to puree the passion fruits yourself, you can buy bottled passion fruit puree or passion fruit juice cocktail year-round.

Can you make a gin fizz without egg whites?

To make an egg-free gin fizz, you can use the water from a can of chickpeas (aquafaba). For each egg white, use 2 tablespoons of chickpea water. You can also omit the egg white entirely, but your cocktail won’t be as fizzy (it’ll be similar to a Tom Collins).
